A documentary exploring the historical context and political significance of the 'romantic reggae' scene.
• Saturday 16th April @ The Coronet Cinema, Notting Hill, London.
Question: Do you recognise the man in this picture?
Menelik Shabazz (Burning an Illusion) charts the rise of Lovers Rock, often dubbed 'romantic reggae', through a rich collage of live performances, archive footage and still photographs. The historical context and political significance of the music are given as much importance as the dance and the fashion trends the genre gave rise to.
Humorous and insightful comments by dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson and comedians such as Angie Le Mar and Glenda Jaxson provide the perfect backdrop to a film that's bound to rejuvenate interest in a music genre unjustly ignored by the mainstream media.
